📚 Dive Deeper

For hundreds of years, the original meaning of the Tarot de Marseille has been a source of mystery, speculation, and debate. When Torah student and data scientist Stav Appel first encountered the Jean Noblet Tarot de Marseille from 1650, he noticed what countless others had missed: the Magician forming the Hebrew letter aleph א with his arms, the Hermit wearing a Jewish prayer shawl, matzah hidden beneath the Moon, and the Tablets of the Law in the crumbling Tower.

These weren't coincidences. They were clues.

In the accompanying booklet, Appel methodically analyzes Noblet’s arcana, discovering a rich cache of Jewish symbols deftly concealed in the Tarot’s imagery. Created during a time when Judaism was prohibited in the Kingdom of France, Appel shows that the terot served a clandestine tool for secret Jewish education disguised as playing cards. For nearly four centuries, these Judaic elements remained unnoticed, misunderstood, or deliberately ignored— until now.

From the Mind of the Explorer

Drawing on his studies of Biblical Hebrew at Hebrew University and Yale Divinity School, Stav Appel uncovers layer after layer of Jewish symbolism hidden in plain sight: sacred objects, Torah narratives, Hebrew letters, and Jewish holy days embedded within the imagery.

Writing in a style influenced by rabbinic literary traditions, Appel presents a landmark contribution to Tarot studies in a work that Ariana Reines calls "a jolt of clarity... like a beam of sunlight dispelling centuries of innuendo."

A Cultural Revelation

This isn't just another Tarot deck. It's a historical document, a cultural artifact, and a window into a time when Jewish wisdom had to be concealed to survive. When examined through the lens of traditional Judaism, the original intended meaning of these 22 cards finally emerges from the shadows.

As Rabbi Sarah Bracha Gershuny notes, "Open your eyes to the Torah in the Tarot, and you will never see this deck—or any other—the same way again."
